i am a writer, engineer, researcher, artist, wandering around the edges of how we find, teach, and inspire ourselves, and one another in digital space. i have been journaling online since september 2011, and soon, will have documented memories from over half of my life to live on the public-semi-anonymous internet. my life as a digital native cautions me against holding too tightly the notion of social-media-as-mirror-as-salvation-as-space(-as-panopticon).

my work is grounded in the experience of finding spaces of expansiveness and reprieve afforded by the internet where there were few in the physical world. but, as someone who later got to live in and be shaped by communities in the pacific northwest, new york, and san francisco after leaving southern california for school, i recognize the irreplacability, inescapability of our physical realities and infrastructures.

my engineering career informs my writing and research practice, giving me the chance to witness and participate in how we construct machines after our collective and individual self-perceptions and dreams (whether of liberation or domination), the sociology of the software industry, venture capital ecosystem, and innovation economy at large. i see the duality, liminality of queerness, being of the asian / chinese diasporas, learning from their futurisms and many others, recognizing how identity is transformed in the presence of community, as answers to the calls for domination, and guides to more peaceful and joyful realities.

most recently, i helped ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘„๐Ÿ‘, a collective of student / new grad / early-career tech workers , raise over $200,000 from venture capitalists and other members of the industry by subverting prestige-generating tactics like exclusive product waiting lists and the industry's fascination with youth consumer trends. this was covered by business insider, forbes, the verge, fortune, wired, among others.

my work in building subtle asian dating, the second largest digital space for the asian diaspora (600k+ members), was recognized by slate, the new york times, among others.

as a journalist, i've written for the los angeles times, and my reporting and editing for the daily evergreen were recognized nationally by the society of professional journalists.

armed with An Approximate Knowledge Of Many Things, i have researched: institutional trust & safety, fandom and myth-making while working on community and growth (eternal); the convergence/divergence of sensing and embodiment across humans and machines while building features for smarthome vision systems (bumblebee spaces); scaled moderation heuristics while contributing to one of the largest moderation systems on the internet (twitter); hyperlocal communities while building ios apps (microsoft); computer science & ai while i was growing into myself in the inland northwest (washington state university).

currently

learning

patience with myself, engineering as a joyful practice, abolition, selfhood / communal care

tinkering

soft security, new museums, new places of convening, ai as mirror and cultural artifact

connecting

always looking to scheme with queer / diaspora / tech worker bbs, people working on digital autonomy / making the web expansive

incubating

content moderation for synchronous voice, location-based AR, music therapy, maternal health, digital nooks, collective power

daydreaming about

homes away from home, thai iced tea (probably!), riding the muni again, conferences and concerts

reflecting on

my recent gap year, moving away prodigousness, the loveliest seasons in sf / seattle / new york
