(Re)discovery through time, space, music

This broadly began as an inquiry in direct response to unhappiness I felt throughout 2017-2018. I focused on a broad question of, "how do I tap back into to that sense of wonder and joy I found in the world as a kid?"

Objective

I wanted to recognize the ability to discover new narratives and frames to see the same place through. To do this, I wanted to find ways to explore a space through slices of time and music.

Plan

Designed many user scenarios and wrote many user stories (as pictured). Further explored these ideas while at Microsoft, at the Seattle Interactive Conference, and at SunHacks at Arizona State University.

Execution

Built a live prototype to conceptualize a desired user interface for a contextual music discovery app. Also implemented an augmented reality discovery application of a similiar nature using Swift, ARKit, and Firebase.

What Was Learned

Deploying an Amazon EC2 instance/better understanding cloud computing in general, was very helpful. Learned how to use the Spotify API, and React web apps as well.

Design-wise, there were interesting ways that music, time, and space interacted.

Space/time: a hyperlocal social media platform enables people to connect by virtue of being in the same place at different times; almost like time traveling. From a community standpoint, different locations serve as hubs for you to discover artifacts and messages left behind by others, and asynchronously communicate in a modern-day pen-pal like fashion.

Music/time: music surfaces emotions and topics otherwise difficult to talk about, giving space for nonverbal expression. I want to explore further applications of recognizing mood to bring up timely and topically relevant songs.

Music/space: based on most-frequented locations, get music recommendations of people that visit the same place.
